Ruffed grouse tail feather tree topper

RGS has received some photos of the 2011 Christmas Tree in the Mellon Room of the PA Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg, PA. The tree has been decorated with feathers from the state bird of Pennsylvania, the ruffed grouse. PA is fairly unique in having a game bird as its "State Bird". RGS HQ received a request for many grouse tail feathers in late September from the Governor's office. We were able to fulfill the request via the tails of grouse that were shot and examined by our biologists at the National Grouse & Woodcock Hunt in October in the Grand Rapids, MN area. The Office also used a mounted grouse provided by the PA Game Commission in the room's decorations.

Our contributing photographer Tim Flanigan and his wife Debbie of Nature Exposure, have previously provided photos of their personal tree decorated with spread and dried tail fans of birds they've shot.
